Company Profile
"Established under section 42 of Companies Ordinance 1984, the Lahore Meat Company started functions in July 2010, with the aim to become Pakistan's first fully integrated Meat Company, later on Punjab Agri Marketing Company merge in Lahore Meat Company. After merger LMC named as Punjab Agriculture & Meat Company. It is a Not For Profit organization with a mission to formalize the meat and horticulture sector Pakistan by interventions at each tier of value chain. The company would play its role as a catalyst in creating and encouraging private businesses to invest into the industry and help ensure their long term sustainability.
State of the art meat processing plant is being built at Shahpur Kanjaran, Lahore. This would be Pakistan's biggest automated processing plant complying with international standards. Currently the company is integrating backwards to ensure animal supply fattened through natural feeding by helping farmers establish fattening farms under the project called "Save the Calf". Registered farmers would get free consultancy, training and subsidies under this project. Planning is underway for integrating forward into retail to the local market.
Enhancing Meat production
We realize that the bottle neck in the meat supply chain lies at the animal production and rearing level. The country is not producing enough animals to meet the local demand for meat. There is a huge production loss due to early slaughtering / mortality of male calves especially buffalo calves. It is estimated that 5-6 million male calves are slaughtered before attaining the age of one month. Due to economic reasons the farmer does not offer milk to the calves, which is a critical survival factor of the calves. Consequently a huge production potential is lost every year.
"Save The Calf" is one such project, started by the Company, which is aimed to change this practice and enhance the meat production by collaborating directly with the farmers. This could prove to trigger an economic activity towards the establishment of the meat industry at the grass root level. The Company is encouraging livestock farmers to raise calf for meat by assisting Rs.3200 subsidy per animal, insurance, consultancy, veterinary services, medication and trainings. The strategic advantages behind this initiative are to provide a platform for the farmers, Milk Replacers and Animal Feed Manufacturer to work together towards an aligned goal.
Future plans hold enhancing beef production through cross breeding, developing disease free zones, improving cattle markets and farmer's capacity building.
Modernizing Processing
The Company also aims to modernize meat processing facilities in Pakistan, which currently do not meet the international hygienic standards. The plant at Shahpur Kanjra'n, called The Lahore Meat Processing Complex, is a stepping stone towards this objective, which would be the country's biggest plant. It is envisioned that all meat consumed locally in the country be processed through plants complied with the international standards of hygiene and Halal.
Ensuring Hygienic Meat Supply:
Lahore Meat Company has planned to take an initiative to take care of ethical and health values of meat & its products while ensuring Halal & hygienic integrated meat value chain through a Compliance Regime right from the animal origin up to the end user. As we need to explore a vast Global Halal Products Market of over US$ 2.3 trillion consumers all over the world. With the ever growing demand for certified halal consumer products, there is a dire need for meat producers to get their products certified within the ambit of WTO requirements.
For this very reason LMC has taken some vital steps to serve as a Certification Body and get accredited by an authorized Accreditation Body i.e. Pakistan National Accreditation Council.
Enhancing Quality:
The Company aims to introduce its own brands in the local market which would meet the international standards. Establishing our own Retail Chain in the country would prove to be a two edged sword, aiming both at providing quality meat to the local market as well as linking the farmer directly with the market.
The Red Revolution:
It is expected by the analysts that the meat industry of Pakistan, with all its potential, would experience a revolution and would formalize with explosive growth. The Lahore Meat Company, itself, is a stepping stone towards this revolution and could prove to be the catalyst towards this industry formalization. Our aims and objectives are not to earn profits but to facilitate and encourage all the stake holders related to the industry to invest towards the long term development. We aim to give business to the farmers, franchisees, cold storage facilitators, distributors etc.
Last, but not the least, enhancing local consumer's awareness levels towards hygiene and quality of meat is crucial towards this revolution and the sustainability of the industry.
Providing Technical Consultancy:
We aim to provide a most needed platform for all the stakeholders related to the industry by developing and sharing a knowledge base. This platform would be used in the future to resolve industry level problems with mutual consent and collaboration of all involved.
