| Kinnow exports to Iran are likely to face serious problems if exporters do not comply with Iranian quarantine department’s requirement of shipping kinnows in refrigerated containers.

“The Iranian authorities have clearly demanded kinnow shipments in refrigerated containers, whereas, Pakistani exporters ignoring the said condition have shipped the fruit in open trucks,” said All Pakistan Fruit & Vegetable Exporters, Importers and Merchants Association Chairman Waheed Ahmed on Monday.
He expressed fear that the Iranian authorities may refuse clearance of Pakistani oranges for non-compliance with the refrigerated container condition. He said that current year the kinnow export target is 0.2 million tons against last year’s 0.15 million tons.
“The government must ensure implementation of compliance issues of the importing countries if it wants forex earnings from kinnow exports,” he said. The representative body of the fruit and vegetable exporters, importers and merchants has also expressed concern over appointment of a leading personality from the telecom sector as the chief executive officer of the Pakistan Horticulture Development and Export Company, says a press release issued on Monday.
The chairman of the association Waheed Ahmed said that the new CEO may be competent in his field and “we will also extend full cooperation to him but without in-depth knowledge of the horticulture industry, its problems and trade-related issues the horticulture industry would not be able to flourish and it would be difficult to achieve desired goals.”
“We propose the Minister for Commerce to review this decision and appoint some experienced and professional person having agro-based experience which will be in the interest of the trade and horticulture industry,” he said.
