Funds sought for mango processing in Multan

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Ashiq Ali Shajra has appealed to the government to release Rs 230 million funds to set up a modern packaging house and cold storage near the mango pulp plant to enhance exports and highlight Multan's identity, as the city of mango.

In a press statement, he said the government should patronise grower organisations and give them representation in all the planning and development departments so that the agriculture policy is formulated on the basis of ground realities.

He recalled that mango was selling at Rs 250 per maund in 1970 when diesel was sold at Rs 1.65 per litre; fertiliser prices were extremely low, with gypsum free of cost, and water was available in abundance. "However, in 2008, mango was selling at Rs 500 per maund when diesel was Rs 70 per litre, while a gypsum bag was priced at Rs 88 and water is scarce," he added. He said policymakers should take stock of the situation and devise policies on agriculture in consultation with growers.
